The considered wardrobe
Cost per wear calculator
A piece earns its place by being worn. Compare two options using the cost of buying, getting and caring for them, and the number of times you expect to reach for each one.
These are illustrative examples, not live listings. Enter both options in the same currency. Changing the label does not convert amounts.
Option 1 costs USDÂ 4.00 less per wear with these inputs.
A lower cost per wear does not make an unaffordable purchase affordable. Try fewer wears before deciding, and compare with something you already own.
How to calculate cost per wear
(Purchase price + shipping, taxes and fees + total care and repair costs) Ă· number of wears
Count care costs over the same period as your wears. If you expect to wear a coat twice a week for 20 weeks each year and keep it for three years, that is 120 wears. A special-occasion bag used five times a year for three years has 15 uses. For a bag, a wear means one occasion or day of use; use the same definition for both options.
The result reflects your assumptions. It does not measure quality, environmental impact, authenticity or future resale value. Currency selection changes the label only; convert any foreign-currency prices before entering them. Calculations run in your browser, and the calculator does not submit your amounts.
A worked example
Consider a hypothetical coat priced at $300, with $25 in shipping and fees and $35 in care over its use. At 120 wears, its $360 total cost comes to $3 per wear. A $180 alternative with $15 in extra costs and $15 in care totals $210. At 30 wears, that is $7 per wear.
The first coat still requires more money. If you wear it only 30 times, its cost rises to $12 per wear. Use realistic numbers rather than adding wears to justify the purchase. These examples use one currency throughout and are not observed product prices.
Start with what you already own
For a decision about future spending, enter zero as the new purchase price of a piece you already own, then add only the future costs of keeping and wearing it. For its historical cost per wear, use the original purchase price and the full period of use instead. Keep the time frame consistent across both options.
Before you buy a resale piece
- Match the exact version. Check model, dimensions, material, color, hardware and included accessories. Similar names do not always mean equivalent pieces.
- Read the condition details. Look at photos of corners, handles, lining, fastenings and soles where relevant. Ask the seller about repairs, alterations, odors or damage that is not clear.
- Compare the full checkout cost. Confirm currency, delivery, taxes, import charges and buyer fees for your destination. An unknown charge is not the same as zero.
- Read the store’s authentication and protection terms. Establish who makes the claim, what it covers and how disputes work. A search result is not an independent authentication.
- Check the return policy for that listing. Confirm any final-sale restriction, return window, return shipping and restocking fee before paying.
- Budget for care. Use a real quote for a known repair. Do not assume that all wear or damage can be reversed.
- Test a conservative wear count. Think about your climate, wardrobe and routine. Leave hypothetical resale proceeds out of the calculation.

Common questions
Should I subtract what I might sell it for?
This calculator does not subtract future resale proceeds. A future sale, price and selling costs are uncertain. Keeping them out makes the spending comparison easier to assess.
What is a good cost per wear?
There is no universal target. Compare options that serve the same purpose, fit your budget and have realistic use estimates. A low number alone is not a reason to buy.
